January 2, 2003   Keeping you on track!!!
Welcome to the Wildlifeuk newsletter
As can be expected up here in Wales, the weather has been somewhat wet. Still I am pleased to report that over the last ten days we have experienced a few sunny days. This has been the opportunity, I have been eagerly waiting for, to film and photograph the Red Kites, the low afternoon sun lighting the underside of the birds, giving them an almost electric appearance. I have had four glorious sessions over the last ten days, three with the stills camera and one (so far) with the film camera. The first outing was a little frustrating as the birds were somewhat wary of my presence out in the open, but by the second trip, all was well. At one fabulous time, I had some 150 to 200 Kites flying around me, one coming so close as to brush my face with a primary feather, perhaps something not experienced since the streets of London during the fifteenth century. I rolled off plenty of film, the electric birds against a deep blue background, pushed one to make the most of the opportunity. The still images you will see, as soon as they are scanned and prepared for the web, (sometime after the New Year). The filming is ongoing, but is well on schedule. I trust all who read this had a good Christmas, and I wish everybody a happy new year.
Gary d’Aquitaine.
